What an incredible evening with the Zomato-foodies at this steakhouse. I use the term steakhouse lightly, as (Sir) Rod and the team also surprised us with a wonderful fish course.
The Krone bubbly was flowing on arrival and the “nibbles” set out on the table was enough to make you salivate.
Each course was expertly selected from the “best sellers” of the menu – so no frilly super-special dishes were concocted, only great quality food and wonderful service from Uzi (the waiter).
Peri Peri Chicken Livers in a spicy sauce, Smoked Springbok Carpaccio, Delicate Prawn Cocktail and Snails in Blue Cheese – baked in Phyllo baskets.
Fish Course: Karoo – so much more than a steakhouse.
Norwegian Salmon, Grilled Kingklip and Calamari served with a Lemon Butter Sauce.
Main Course: the ultimate plethora of meat and sides (I think this course pushed us all over the edge!)
Karoo Lamb Pie, Rump Steak, Massive Fillet, Lamb Shank, Ostrich
Sides: Fresh Cut Chips, Sheba, Rice, Baked Potato, Mashed Potato, Butternut, Creamed Spinach, Button Mushrooms
Sauces: Bearnaise, Mushroom, Cheese and Pepper Sauce
The Karoo Lamb Pie was a pleasant surprise with buttery-soft cubed of lamb and a rich gravy topped off with a golden puff pastry dome.
My favourite side dish was the Creamed Spinach; perfectly seasoned and creamy, a perfect accompaniment to the red meats.
I was a little disappointed with the Bearnaise Sauce; as this little bowl of anticipation was sadly splitting by the time it was served. Although these guys make a mean Pepper Sauce – I will order that on its own as a starter. 🙂
Desserts: A compilation worthy of a temporary diabetic-state.
Malva Pudding, Peppermint Crisp Tart, Chocolate Brownie served with Cream, Ice-Cream and Chocolate Sauce.
Hands down my favourite: The Peppermint Crisp Tart – a no-nonsense classic.
Krone (Chardonnay & Pinot Noir blend; with the crisp taste of fresh green apples);
Warwick First Lady (100% Cabernet Sauvignon);
Flagstone Noon Gun (blend of Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier).
My only criticism was the music in the background – I am aware of the demographic of the restaurant (and that we are in fact in Pretoria) but the Afrikaans pop music was too much to ignore.
Refreshing to see the floor managers in professional attire (suits) and to find out that they take service very seriously with an “upstairs floor manager” and a “downstairs floor manager”.
The restaurant was packed with clientele from all walks of life (inside and outside), yet we felt extremely spoiled and taken care of. Thanks to the wonderful host (Q) from Zomato as well.
Worth a trip to experience how they’ve “stepped up” their game!
