Oh my, Zevenwacht Wine Estate

Your must-visit wine estate in the wine country; situated on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, Zevenwacht has viticultural roots which penetrate deep into the historic past of South Africa. While literally meaning Seven Expectations, the name Zevenwacht exemplifies the abundant delights which await visitors to the Farm. A leader in wine tourism, Zevenwacht was one of the first Wine Estates to establish a restaurant, hotel and conference facility, Cheesery and Spa on the Estate.

But for the landdwellers in Gauteng, we bring the winelands to you….

Amélia Visser (Owner and Brand Ambassador at Vino de Vie) proudly represents the Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Pretoria. And here we share with you why…

Here is more about the estate:

A family owned and managed Estate, the current owners, Harold and Denise Johnson purchased the farm in 1992, and have committed themselves to a programme of development to realise Zevenwacht’s rich potential beyond wine production. The estate has a strong commitment to historic and cultural preservation, as well as the active socio-economic upliftment of its workers and their families.

Two prime farming locations supply the Zevenwacht winery. The home vineyards on Zevenwacht’s 450 hectare maritime property supplies the bulk of the wine that fills the 1000 ton cellar. The farm Zevenrivieren, at the crest of the “Helshoogte” (Heights of Hell) Pass, overlooking Stellenbosch, provides equally outstanding grapes and adds fascinating variety to the collection.

Their winemaking philosophy is simple – quality begins in the vineyard. Their winemaker, Jacques Viljoen, has been entrusted with enticing the very best from these unique properties.

Currently the Zevenwacht range of wines includes Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The slopes of Zevenwacht not only produce wines, but also mark the site of one of the Cape’s most remarkable Commercial enterprises – The Tin Mines which operated here in the years leading up to the First World War.

The shafts and machinery from that venture still remain on Zevenwacht bearing eloquent testimony to this impressive undertaking. A white blend and a red blend are made from top quality grapes exclusively from vineyards on these sites. As a result a specific sense of place finds expression in the complexity and richness of these two Tin Mine blends.

Jacques comes from a family dedicated to viticulture which is where his passion for winemaking and vineyard development were firmly entrenched. After completing his BSc. Agriculture at the University of Stellenbosch he carried out his practical internship at Bergkelder. He has also undertaken harvests in France and has travelled to the wine regions in Europe to broaden his horizons.

After gaining practical experience at the Bergkelder and Annandale Wine Estate, Jacques became Assistant Winemaker at Zevenwacht, a position he held until 2005 when he took charge of the Zevenwacht Cellars.

Jacques uses his creative flair in the winemaking process but is the first to acknowledge his Assistant Winemaker Charles and their small, skilled cellar team with the regular accumulation of awards. He keeps an open mind on developing new vineyards and winemaking techniques without restricting his focus to any single varietal.

Jacques has built up a highly regarded wine brand for Zevenwacht and under the mentorship of consultant, Chris Keet, has recently introduced the Z Collection – a small quantity of top quality wines – namely a Bordeaux style white and red blend.

The Chardonnay gives superb lime-citrus flavors; the Viognier lends a delicate perfume of dried peaches and apricots while the Roussanne and Chenin act like salt and pepper, spicing things up!!download
Zevenwacht The Tin Mine Red 2014
Purple red in colour, with the nose that exudes aromas of violets, dried spices and concentrated black prunes with a slow release of red cranberry and dark chocolate. The palate impresses with density on entry matched with persistent yet supple tannins – a multi layered wine. This texture is perfectly offset by balanced acidity that allows for a remarkable length of finish.
