Oh my, heritage day

national-braai-day-300x277Today is the famed “Heritage Day”, which has been dubbed National Braai Day in recent years.  I guess with the hotchpotch of  cultures, languages and celebrations taking place on one particular day it would be better to unify a nation under the roaring fires of a “braai”.

Eventually, in the vein of celebrating shared culture rather than focusing on cultural divisions, it was an initiative by Jan Scannell (otherwise known as ‘Jan Braai‘), Braai4Heritage, that called upon all South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai (barbeque) on Heritage day. The idea has had some high profile supporters, the most notable being Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who in 2007 was made the National Spokesperson for “Braai Day.”

This particular “holiday” has its own song (now short of new year, christmas and the other myriad of religious holidays I do not know of a single “bank holiday” which has it’s own backtrack), and here you can view/listen to the track:

I hear those voices until late at night
All together and we feel all right, all right
I see their faces in the golden light
All together and we feel all right, all right
Feeling Alright, hope you feeling alright people…

As all the traditional, experimental and even unknown dishes are prepared and everyone dishes out unsolicited braai-advice, I will not share a recipe or a tip or a marinade for today.

Just stack your wood high, light your fires proudly and grill your meat as you prefer (and make sure you have a drink or two).
