Pomodoro Magic in Morningside!

Have you ever dreamed of waves of delicious pasta creations, all adorned with rich and fragrant sauces? Or jewels of seafood drenched in authentic Mediterranean flavours?
That is exactly what you can expect with a visit to Pomodoro Ristorante!

We were treated to a sneak peek of the menu with a “Bloggers Dinner Party” showcasing seafood, pasta, ostrich fillet and incredible wines.

An intimate “bloggers dinner party” included some new and familiar faces, as well as our hosts, one of which was the owner Stefano Mas.

ABOUT THE RESTAURANT

The biggest surprise was most certainly that they have been in existence for over a decade. Offering great service and quality of food and their love for cooking authentic Italian meals and enjoyment of good wine reflects in the menu and the hospitality of the restaurant.
Offering a vast selection of Italian dishes, ranging from grilled ciabatta bread with a selection of toppings, to meaty favourites.

An equally impressive wine list is recently updated and features top South-African and imported selections.

Enquire about their set menu offerings; price excludes all drinks, teas, coffees and waiters tips. The set menu options showcase the best dishes in an indulgent three-course menu which will have something for every taste.

Pomodoro Ristorante is set in the Morningside Shopping Centre, among a row of restaurants; boasting a busy restaurant (compared with the competitors) filled with laughter and chats.
Not being fond of “mall restaurants”, this is not your normal “strip mall”, but an elite shopping experience paired with a carefully selected restaurant offering. Strolling down the “restaurant alley” in Morningside Shopping Centre it was clear that Pomodoro was a favourite among the early-dinner crowd, which only picked up later on in the evening. Playing host to a birthday party, a social gathering of PR and foodies, as well as a well-known Joburg Chef (not even going to name-drop, don’t ask).

ABOUT THE FOOD

Delicious!! Especially when shared among food-lovers and wine-drinkers, our kind of people. And then Stefano presented “family style” platters in the centre of the table allowing us to dig in and feast on the fare.

Kicking off the feast with Mussels in a White Wine, Butter and Saffron Sauce. Boom! Sauce packed with punch and flavour! Good enough to bottle and sell on its own. And as we mopped up the sauce with warm Ciabatta bread, we were all grinning. Well, if this is the start of things to come, then it’s going to be a good evening.
Pair fabulously with the blush pink Diemersfontein Grenache Noir Rosé.

The second dish was the Squid-Ink Tagliolini with Prawn Meat, Baby Tomatoes and Basil Pesto. Silky, black pasta strands tossed in Basil Pesto adorned with Prawn and oven-roasted Baby Tomatoes. Pasta cooked to perfection with the slightest of al dente resistance and coated in fragrant basil pesto. Delightful and pleasing! I would’ve scoffed an entire platter of that pasta if nobody was watching. But instead, I restrained myself and continued to sip on my glass of Raats Original Chenin Blanc. The zesty citrus flavour and long mineral finish cuts through the Basil Pesto and delivers a refreshing mouthful of fruity flavours.

Alternatively to the shellfish; the Salmon Risotto made an appearance. Another generous helping of pink Salmon cosy in a bed of creamy Risotto. The taste was generous in Salmon and the rice was cooked to perfection; similar to the pasta, again to an inch of al denté.

@BoozyFoodie exclaimed it in three words “TRY THE GNOCCHI”!
And I couldn’t agree more; Pomodoro’s exceptional home-made Gnocchi in a creamy Wild Mushroom and Truffle sauce is rich, indulgent and satisfying.
(Trust me, this is worth a trip to Pomodoro Ristorante on its own.)
Served with the Oak Valley Beneath the Clouds Chardonnay. Nestled in the Elgin wine region; Oak Valley boasts purity of fruit and with vineyards up to 500m above sea level makes Elgin the coolest wine region in South Africa. Cooler temperatures offer crisp white wines, and this is exactly what you can expect for this glass of golden nectar. The Chardonnay slays the creamy, luxurious sauce and offers a pleasing relief from a heavy dish.

The final course was Grilled Ostrich Fan Fillet in a Balsamic Jus served with Sauteed Baby Potatoes, paired with L’Avenir Provenance Pinotage.
Large offerings of Ostrich reached the table; cooked to varying degrees of medium to rare, with helpings of roasted potatoes (with crisp edges and a golden glow).
The earthy notes from the Pinotage added to the Ostrich Fillet and the pair delivered a long luxurious finish to the meal.

Apart from Stefano who is such a warm and hospitable host, the food is prepared with skill, the service is friendly and non-intrusive, and the vibe of the bustling restaurant is upbeat and lively.
